Oxygen Therapy Benefits Being Cut by Medicare

Starting in January Medicare is capping what they will pay for a patients oxygen therapy. Medicare used to pay indefinitely for the continued use of an oxygen concentrator for a patients use. Now Medicare is cutting that back to a three year cap and the supplier of oxygen has to continue to maintain the concentrator for as long as you own it. Now how often do you think that the oxygen supplier is going to maintain that machine? Probably the least amount possible. This cap is not good for patients out there that are going to need oxygen therapy for more than three years. Filters will not be changed on time, purity will not be tested enough times through out the year and if that oxygen concentrator is not maintained it will of course break down.

Oxygen concentrators only cost the supplier about $500 or so dollars. Medicare figures they are making enough money those first few years to be able to maintain the machine for the rest of its life. Medicare is not looking at it from the suppliers point of view. Every entrepreneur knows it cost money to run a business. Even though there is money that comes in off of each rental doesn't mean that it is all profit. Most companies have employees. They need a truck to drive around in. They have to pay for insurance and gas for there vehicles. Well you get my point, its a lot of money to run these businesses the right way and give there patients the attention that they need.

Well the new way starts in January. Lets see how long it lasts before Medicare finds out that maintaining oxygen concentrators for free for a patient that will be on oxygen therapy for the rest of there life will only add up to trouble when a supplier can't stay in business to keep up with there promise.
