Video SEO For Car Dealers - Part I - Getting Ready

Video search engine optimization (Video SEO) has been a hot buzzword in today's rapidly advancing auto market, yet many car dealers have not utilized it to their advantage because of excessive costs of hiring someone to do it for them, or their failure to understand how powerful and important video online is with their prospective customers.

My goal with this short series of articles is to share why video is important for car dealers who are trying to reach prospective customers online, how to create video content in-house so as to minimize costs, and finally how to utilize video search engine optimization techniques to place their vehicles of interest online for people to find them. If you are a car dealer or other business who is looking to maximize your exposure online at a minimal cost, this will be a series you will find quite useful.

Why is video online so powerful? Simply put, if a picture is worth a thousand words, a video is worth that ten times over. Advances in internet speed and technology have allowed the use of video online to be not only feasible, but a necessity for today's demanding consumers.

The first place to start is to create some video content for your consumers. Ask yourself "What do my prospective customers want to see?". The majority of car shoppers want to get some basic information about the car they are interested in. If they are looking at an SUV, they might be interested in whether it will tow their boat, whether it has a third row seat for their large family, and perhaps a DVD entertainment system to enjoy while taking some long trips. Most dealers understand this, but do not have the money to pay a vendor to shoot the video and complete the video seo for them. The solution lies within the dealership. Today's computers and video equipment allow a dealer to make their videos in-house at minimal cost.

The first piece of equipment you will need is a digital camcorder. You can find many of these online for less than one thousand dollars, and for making short online videos, you can often use models that cost less than $500. You can use a traditional digital camera that shoots short video clips, however I would suggest getting a nicer digital camcorder, and would encourage getting a High Definition model, as more of the online video hosting sites will support that format. I would also encourage finding a digital camcorder that has a plug for an external microphone. Wireless microphones can be difficult to work with and often you will get a lot of signal interference in a dealership showroom.

Once you get your digital camcorder, you will then need an inexpensive tripod, a protective camera bag to put your camcorder in, and an external microphone. Your local Radio Shack or other electronics stores should carry a lapel microphone with cord that should plug into your camera.

Depending on the digital camcorder you purchase, there are multiple video software programs that will allow you to put your video together on the computer. I have used Pinnacle Systems software for video editing for years with great success and have found it fairly simple to use. One warning though, you need to use this software on a computer that has plenty of RAM and hard drive memory, and the software will work best with a fast computer processor.

Your first goal should be to acquire this equipment, and then learn how to use it. That means learning how to use your camera, including how to use your external microphone, and learning how to then download your digital video clips onto your computer. Take some time to practice with your video software tutorial, and take some example video clips to practice with. Once you feel comfortable using your camera and the video software editing platform, it is time to start planning on what to shoot for your first video.

The next part of this series will share how to setup for your first video shoot, as well as some tips on how to get the best video footage and optimal audio quality before you edit your final segment.
